Visiting scientists at the Institute I
It is now the summer break, and as is tradition/practice, we have multiple students from various countries visiting us over this summer break too!

Karol Frydrych is a PhD Student at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT PAN, Warsaw, Poland). He is visiting the Modeling and Simulation Group on a research stay sponsored by the KMM-VIN Fellowship Grant, and will be at the Institute I until mid of September 2017. During his stay, he will work in close collaboration with Dr. Arun Prakash on the development and implementation of remeshing and solution mapping procedures in the framework of crystal plasticity finite element method. The developed procedures shall then be applied to the simulation of multiple pass Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) process.

Flynn Walsh is a visiting student in the Modeling and Simulation Group as part of the DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) program . A San Francisco Bay Area native, he studied physics and materials science at the University of California, Berkeley where he performed research on the fracture of a diverse array of materials in the group of Prof. Robert Ritchie. In Erlangen, Flynn will work with Frédéric Houllé and study the deformation behavior of Ni-based superalloy nanocubes using molecular dynamics simulations, with particular interest on the impact of γ precipitates found within γ´ cubes. Upon returning to the United States, he will join the Materials PhD program at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Angus Coyne-Grell, a second year (4th semester) undergraduate student at the University of Cambridge studying materials science is visiting the High Temperature Materials Group of Dr. Steffen Neumeier, on scholarships from the Magdalene College Summer Internship and Research Bursary and The Worshipful Company of Armourers & Brasiers, until the end of August 2017. During his stay, he will be assisting PhD students in the group in characterizing and comparing a Co-base Superalloy with a Co-WC hard metal using techniques including electron microscopy, nanoindentation, uniaxial compression and creep tests, with the goal to assess the alloy´s potential for tribological applications.
